- Big assumption and certainly not what he intended you to assume. I
- have a friend who does not have a car. When he needs one he rents
- one. The total cost is significantly less than owning one and he gets
- to see the actual cost of various excursions.

- The idea (Callenbach's main idea in the book) is to look at the actual
- costs of all the decisions we make. If you start with the assumption
- that you don't have a car it makes decisions like housing costs look
- quite different. For example, selecting a house or apartment near
- work, grocery stores and decent mass transit can get a fair shake.
- By this I mean increased cost (purchase price or rent) is offset by
- significant transportation cost savings.
