  18. Thanks for all the overwhelming response that you have sent.  Indeed,
  19. it is important for many of us with VR projects and those of us trying
  20. to get projects going to communicate with each other.  Before I go on
  21. though I have to express some important points that must be stressed
  22. about this informal workshop.
  23.  
  24. The first of these is the fact that it is very informal and is
  25. intended to be an information gathering and communication meeting.
  26. Secondly, and more importantly, this is NOT an official NSF activity.
  27. Rather, NSF has graciously donated the use of its conference space.  A
  28. group of program officers from the education directorate are
  29. interested in current VR projects and in promoting communication among
  30. VR and education.  Dr. Herb Wylen, a program officer in Research
  31. Evaluation and Dissemination, was the sponsor of this workshop.

  33. Finally, I myself am not a program officer nor do I represent the
  34. interests of NSF.  There will be program officers there who are
  35. interested in gathering information.  In fact Dr. Y. T. Chien, the
  36. Division Director of Information Robotics and Information Systems,
  37. will address the workshop at 11:30 in order to inform all of us about
  38. the current status of the Federal Coordinating Committee on Science,
  39. Education and Technology's High Performance Computing and
  40. Communications Committee on Virtual Reality. as well as to provide
  41. contact information for many of the government agencies who are
  42. interested in VR projects.
  43.  
  44. In spite of the tedious facts it is the general feeling that this will
  45. be an overwhelmingly important meeting.  This message is followed by a
  46. list of most of the persons who have RSVPed for the workshop.  The
  47. list is in no particular order and most probably represents the order
  48. in which the RSVPs piled up on my desk.  It is an incomplete list and
  49. I expect a few more than listed to show up.  I look forward to meeting
  50. all of you and having a very productive session.
