- Dear Participants:
-
- Thanks for all the overwhelming response that you have sent. Indeed,
- it is important for many of us with VR projects and those of us trying
- to get projects going to communicate with each other. Before I go on
- though I have to express some important points that must be stressed
- about this informal workshop.
-
- The first of these is the fact that it is very informal and is
- intended to be an information gathering and communication meeting.
- Secondly, and more importantly, this is NOT an official NSF activity.
- Rather, NSF has graciously donated the use of its conference space. A
- group of program officers from the education directorate are
- interested in current VR projects and in promoting communication among
- VR and education. Dr. Herb Wylen, a program officer in Research
- Evaluation and Dissemination, was the sponsor of this workshop.
-
- Finally, I myself am not a program officer nor do I represent the
- interests of NSF. There will be program officers there who are
- interested in gathering information. In fact Dr. Y. T. Chien, the
- Division Director of Information Robotics and Information Systems,
- will address the workshop at 11:30 in order to inform all of us about
- the current status of the Federal Coordinating Committee on Science,
- Education and Technology's High Performance Computing and
- Communications Committee on Virtual Reality. as well as to provide
- contact information for many of the government agencies who are
- interested in VR projects.
-
- In spite of the tedious facts it is the general feeling that this will
- be an overwhelmingly important meeting. This message is followed by a
- list of most of the persons who have RSVPed for the workshop. The
- list is in no particular order and most probably represents the order
- in which the RSVPs piled up on my desk. It is an incomplete list and
- I expect a few more than listed to show up. I look forward to meeting
- all of you and having a very productive session.
-
- Sincerely,
-

- [MODERATOR'S NOTE: I've asked Robert to post a summary of the meeting
- here at its conclusion, but hope that othe participants will also do
- so. It would be appreciated by many if attendees at other official
- meetings, including those not in the United States, would put memos on
- this newsgroup. It's the only way to build a global community and
- movement. Thanks, Robert. -- Bob Jacobson]
