  22. The claim that all mitochondrial DNA is transmitted via females has
  23. been known to be false since the 1970's. A small proportion is in fact
  24. transmitted by patrilineal descent. My source is a recent issue of
  25. Science et Vie (a French monthly which you might compare with
  26. Scientific American), in which the Eve hypothesis was discussed.

  28. Further, if all mitochondrial DNA was inherited matrilineally, the
  29. proponents of the Eve hypothesis would still be guilty, this time
  30. of circular reasoning and, again, of selective use of the data.
  31. The circular reasoning and selected use of the data are this:

  34. Let us consider those traits in restituting the phylogeny of
  35. the species.
  36. Since those traits are transmitted only by females, the
  37. nodes of the tree, and therefore its root, represent females.
  38. Therefore, all individuals are descended from the same female.
