  17.              Summer Research Fellowships for Undergraduates
  18.
  19. LOCATION: The Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry, The University
  20. of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
  21.
  22. DIRECTOR: Dr. Henry F. Schaefer, III.
  23.
  24. RESEARCH: Each Summer Research Fellow will conduct an independent
  25. research project under the guidance of a Senior Scientist and will
  26. receive adequate training (lectures and computer workshops) in molecular
  27. quantum mechanics and spectroscopy.  Research at the CCQC involves the
  28. use and development of state-of-the-art theoretical methods to describe
  29. the electronic structure of molecules.  A wide variety of chemical
  30. problems have been examined using _ab initio_ methods such as
  31. Self-Consistent Field, Configuration Interaction, and Coupled Cluster.
  32.
  33. Some examples include:
  34. (1) silicon analogs of common hydrocarbon compounds;
  35. (2) potential energy hypersurfaces governing elementary gas-phase
  36.     chemical reactions;
  37. (3) problems in physical organic chemistry, including carbenes and
  38.     biradicals;
  39. (4) hydrogen-bonded systems.
  40.
  41. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have completed their junior
  42. undergraduate year and have outstanding academic credentials.
  43. Successful candidates invariably have an interest in pursuing Ph.D.
  44. studies in theoretical physical chemistry in the United States.
  45.
  46. STIPENDS: $1300 per month for a 10-12 week period.  Up to $400 in travel
  47. assistance will be provided.
  48.
  49. APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 1, 1993
