- Perhaps some consider development of tolerance and abstinence effects
- evidence of addiction, but I suspect many substance abuse authorities
- would not. Addiction refers to drug craving and a pattern of abusive
- use, escalating doses, and continued abuse of a substance despite
- adverse consequences. Many depressives who take tricyclics develop
- tolerance to the drug's sedative and anticholinergic effects - and can
- experience a clear abstinence syndrome if the drug is stopped abruptly
- (insomnia, nausea, etc). Nobody craves tricyclics and tricyclics are
- not considered addictive.
