  11. My 10 year-old son has had two exercise indused asthma attacks
  12. before this year.  He has had three attacks since last summer
  13. that were chronic in nature (not an event, but rather his lungs
  14. developed a wheeze that progressively got worse).  Those three
  15. times his gp prescribed a strong/week-long cycle of prednisone.
  16. Each time this cleared his lungs.

  18. The second event/treatment, last October, left him with a
  19. chronic stomach ache, a known side-effect (we guess the
  20. prednisone did it, they did an upper gi, in December, no ulcer 
  21. detected).

  23. "The Complete Book of Children's Allergies, A Guide for Parents",
  24. by B. Robert Feldman, M. D., from Columbia Presbyterian Med
  25. Center, ISBN 0-8129-1211-X, lists the side-effects of extended
  26. steriod use, and my son showed most of them within days, weight
  27. gain (5 lbs, in a week), moon face, headache, insomnia, bad
  28. stomach ache, etc.  The text says that this is not supposed to 
  29. happen until after two weeks of use.

  31. So, why does he get these side-effects?  Is the dose to strong?
  32. I assume this will happen again, in the spring, when the plants
  33. are active, he has always had allergies to various pollens,
  34. dust, molds, etc.  Should we avoid prednisone?  If so, when his
  35. lungs are stressed, what do we do?  He already takes the daily 
  36. inhaler of cromolyn sodium (Intal) and uses albuterol sulfate
  37. (Ventolin) when he begins wheezing.  He has taken the Intal,
  38. daily for the last year and a half.

  40. I don't want to give him the steriod again.  What are the
  41. alternatives?
