- In extensive literature searching for two cousins who each had mastectomies
- last year, I found one protocol which appeared better than all the others.
- It is a French multidrug protocol, whose results were reported on 250
- patients treated between 1980 and 1986 (Jacquillat et al, Cancer 66:119-29,
- 1990). This protocol is unique in that standard antineoplastic agents for
- breast cancer are administered as neoadjuvant therapy, prior to any
- surgery. About 30% of patients got complete tumor disappearance with drugs
- alone; for the rest, local radiation was used (always in conjunction with
- continuing chemotherapy).
-
- This protocol got consistently higher than typical 5-year survivals at all
- stages, ranging from 95% for stage I to 58% for stage IIIB. It may be more
- effective as the chemotherapeutic dissolution of tumor within the body may
- help build an immune response. From other related checking I have done on
- another gynecological cancer, I've found that the French have made some
- genuine cancer advances which have been slow to catch on in the U.S. more
- due to medical politics than scientific judgement.
-
- Since this protocol uses standard chemotherapeutic agents for breast cancer,
- it is not in principle hard to administer at any hospital. I'd be glad to
- discuss this with you in detail if you wish. -- David Scheim
