- An article concerning the implementation of chaos theory in Japan was in
- the January 27th Business section of the New York Times. It was rather
- interesting, some of the salients point made by the writer:
-
- * American implementation of new technology is geared toward military
- applications. (Very astute observation.)
-
- *Japanese research of new technology is geared toward consumer goods.
- (Again, very astute.)
-
- *A Japanese academic voiced his fear that Japan's propensity for quick,
- simple applications detract from basic long term research. He cites
- a lack of real understanding of the subject.
-
- *Cited fuzzy logic as the last fad.
-
- *No government backed programs for chaos reserach is on the horizon,
- but there are two industry/academic committees studying the applications
- of chaos.
-
- *Toyota is sponsoring a conference named:"Toward the Harnessing of Chaos".
-
- *The research is split into two catagories:
- 1) Analyze chaotic behavior to search for patterns.
- 2) Creating chaotic behavior and using it.
-
- Under the first category, the following works were cited:
- *Stock market forecasting-Hitachi.
- *Diagnose mental health by measuring capillary pulse in the
- fingers-Computer Convenience.
-
- Under the second category:
- *Kerosene heater control-Sanyo. Allows temperature to fluctuate,
- saves energy, more comfortable.
- *Chaos in neural network computers-Kazuyuki Aihara, Tokyo Denki U.
- *Chaos chip-New Japan Radio Corp. Can be used in stereos to generate
- light patterns to accompany music.
