  21. There  is  a great flurry of activity in the field of  fuel  cell
  22. design  going on all over the world. An international  conference
  23. on fuel cells, 29Nov-2Dec,1992, in Tucson, Arizona drew over  500
  24. participants  and there were many papers on fuel cells for  vehi-
  25. cles. The 645 page collection of abstracts "Fuel Cell - 1992 Fuel
  26. Cell Seminar" is available from

  48. Mark DeLuchi is leading the effort in the application of hydrogen
  49. fuel  cells  at the Institute for Transportation Studies  at  the
  50. University  of California at Davis, He has recently  published  a
  51. 158 page paper on the subject. (a more detailed address I  cannot
  52. supply at the moment).

  64. Also  Ballard  in Canada, Energy Partners in Florida  and  Eagle-
  65. Picher  are developing fuel cells for automobiles.  The  Japanese
  66. and Europeans are in there too.

  68. The  reason that fuel cells have cost so much in the past is  the
  69. cost  of the platinum catalyst of which 0.4-1.0 grams per  square
  70. centimeter were required. For a cell using 2,000 to 3,000  square
  71. centimeters  of  cell area that was a lot of  platinum.  However,
  72. recent  developments in proton exchange membrane,  hydrogen  fuel
  73. cells have reduced that requirement to 100 micro-grams per square
  74. centimeter.

  77. with  phone,  fax, E-mail and address information on  a  bulletin
  78. board set up for the American Hydrogen Association. Virtually all
  79. the  companies  involved in the field are  listed  there.  Unfor-
  80. tunately, the BBS does not have a link with any net yet. The name
  81. of the file with the names is "fcellmtg.zip" (45K). All are  wel-
