  12. I've read "Bankruptcy 1995: The Coming Collapse of America and How to Stop It"  
  13. by Harry Figgie, and it scares the hell out of me.  According to Figgie, the  
  14. most likely results of inaction on the deficit are:
  15.  
  16.        A catastrophic market panic
  17.        Hyperinflation
  18.        20% of American jobs gone
  19.        Social Security payments cut or eliminated
  20.       
  21. Figgie writes, "This is not an exaggeration.  In fact, I may be understating  
  22. the degree of calamity that will befall most Americans.  It's going to be  
  23. awful, and whatever you think I mean by awful, you can be sure that it's going  
  24. to be worse."

  26. I am convinced that the deficit is the single most important issue facing our  
  27. country today.  I have written to my U.S. Senators, Congresswoman, the  
  28. President, the Vice President, and prominent politicians such as Lloyd Bentsen,  
  29. Leon Panetta, George Mitchell, Bob Dole, Tom Foley, and Newt Gingrich, urging  
  30. them to take action, and demanding to know what they intend to do.
