  24. I was happy to provide Marko Amnell and his friend, Rosanne, with
  25. whatever information I could find on this subject in Professor 
  26. E. A. Wallis Budge's book, _The Mummy_.  But I know that Mr. Amnell
  27. is a student of the Scriptures, and so I would like to call his
  28. attention to two sections of the Book of Exodus:
  29.  
  30.     "For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night,
  31.   and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt,
  32.   both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I
  33.   will execute judgments; I am the L-RD."  Exodus (2 Moses) 12:12

  35. Nut, along with her husband Seb and her assorted offspring Osiris,
  36. Isis, Set (Typhon), Nephthys, Anubis, Shu, and Tefnut, are among
  37. the "gods of Egypt" upon whom the L-RD executed judgment during
  38. the Tenth Plague.  It should be noted that no one believes in
  39. these Egyptian gods any more, and no one worships them, even
  40. though there are still people who believe in Krishna, Rama,
  41. Vishnu, and Shiva.

  43.     "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, nor any
  44.   manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above,
  45.   or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water
  46.   under the earth; thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor
  47.   serve them . . ."  Exodus (2 Moses) 20:4-5a.

  49. Among the People of the Book, prohibition against graven images 
  50. of items in the earth, sea, or sky has been followed most strictly 
  51. by Muslims, and least strictly by Christians, with Jews somewhere
  52. in between.  I was recently advised that a wooden representation
  53. I had made of the New Moon (essentially a black disk with a thin 
  54. silver sliver along one edge) would have to be withdrawn and replaced
  55. because it runs afoul of a "black list" of objects that it is still 
  56. forbidden for Jews to carve because these objects were once or 
  57. are still worshipped as gods somewhere.

  59. I recognize that Rosanne will be sculpting her image of Nut either
  60. for artistic or academic purposes, with no thought in mind that
  61. any fool out there would actually worship such an image.  Still,
  62. it might be wise for her and Marko to consult a competent religious
  63. authority, appropriate to whatever religion(s) they may believe in,
  64. before going ahead with this project.
