- I presume you are talking about a Laue or a Debye-Scherrer pattern. Although
- these techniques are useful (Laue, most significantly for identifying crystal
- facets), they have been supeseded by diffractometers in the recent times. The
- advantage being the intensity of the diffracted beam is measured directly, as
- opposed to measuring through the blcakening of a photographic film. One can use
- both a powder diffractometer (most simple to use, if large single crystals are
- not available easily) or a single crystal diffractometer (slightly more
- involved) for crystal structure determination. The diffraction patterns are
- plots of the measured intensity versus twice the Bragg angle.
