  12. Just to chime in on the Thoren biography of Tycho
  13. (watch for my review of it in Journal for the History
  14. of Astronomy): It is very good, especially useful
  15. and entertaining on the life of a Danish nobleman
  16. who was also an astronomer--two roles that did not
  17. always mesh well.

  19. Tycho did loose part of his nose in a youthful duel,
  20. and covered the wound with a metal piece.  he may well
  21. have had several different ones--one for everyday use,
  22. one for formal wear, etc.  Some reports state the
  23. jewelry was gold or silver, but a late 19th century
  24. examination of Tycho's skull showed some discoloration
  25. of the bone in the nose area that has been attributed
  26. to copper.  This is mentioned in Dreyer's  biography
  27. of Tycho.
