  19. This may be completely off the mark but in a recent article on
  20. baseball bats a process called boning came up.  It seems that baseball
  21. players used to rub their bats with bones to harden the surface.  A
  22. representative of the Louisville Slugger Co. (a bat manufacturer) was
  23. quoted to the effect that rubbing the wood with any smooth object (eg
  24. a bottle, a bone) burnished the surface changing it's properties
  25. slightly.
