  12. I spend a huge amount of time on boats but am relatively new to scuba
  13. diving.  I have recently gotten my PADI open water diver certificate and
  14. now have decided to invest in some gear.

  16. I have looked through teh archives and the FAQ but have not found any
  17. information or reviews of equipement that seemed particularly helpful.

  19. I wandered into the local dive shop where I was immediatly overwhelmed
  20. by a vast selection of gear of widely varying prices.  What are the
  21. sorts of features that make one item worth more than another??? what are
  22. the standard sorts of names and items that are reliable and generally
  23. descent buys.

  25. I'm most concerned about the choice of BC and regulator as these are the
  26. most costly and most crucial items (I'm prbably not going to buy a tank
  27. at this time).  I'm also a starving grad student, so price is an object.
  28. I don't have any idea how the prices of teh local store compare with
  29. others.  I've heard the local store isn't bad, but I don't know what the
  30. items should cost.

  32. The local shop also has a few used items.  The fellow I spoke with
  33. suggested that I might be interested in a particular used BC in the
  34. store.  It is a Sherwood.  The nearest thing I could make out to a model
  35. on it was the word "Freedom".  It apeared to be in good shape.  He said
  36. it had gone through only light use and was being sold by a grad student
  37. who needed teh money for school.  What should I look for in used gear?
  38. What could go wrong with it that I should be concerned about?  The
  39. asking price on the this used BC was about that of the cheapest new BC
  40. in the store (~$200.00).  Is this a decent price for this equipement?

  42. The store also had an inexpensive used regulator for sale.  I think it
  43. was a sherwood, but I've forgotten.  Same questions about this as for
  44. teh BC.
