- Vicky and Andrew,
- I highly recommend you stay at Plaza las Glorias and dive with
- Aqua Safari. We spent 10 days there last August and were pleased
- with everything. After some research, we chose a package through
- Sea Safari for the hotel and 3 dive days, mostly because they throw
- in a 20% discount on all food and drink at the hotel. We found the
- hotel prices to be quite competitive and the food tasty. The hotel
- is a 10-15 minute walk from "downtown" (depending on the temperature
- and humidity!) and Aqua Safari has a complete shop and boat pickup
- spot both places. At the hotel A/S even has storage lockers for
- your gear if you don't want to lug it back to the room. We signed
- up for additional dives, night and day, when we got there, at no
- price difference compared to additionals with the package. The boat
- loads ranged from 6-15 divers, 1-2 DM's and a Captain. The dives were
- all drift dives with moderate to strong current, 80 degree water and
- lots to see and do. We found the DM's to be knowledgable, very
- friendly and flexible when defining the dives to adjust to the group
- skill levels; two really great DM's were Mario and Juan "chicken
- diver", both deserving of above average gratuities. An added bonus
- with A/S was we could keep the rental gear and get refills for
- afternoon and evening beach dives if we were diving the next day. A very good book showing all the dive spots is available both there
- and in most shops here.
- Plan on renting a car (Jeep) one day (about $80) to drive to the
- other side of the island, just to see the contrast. You can stop at
- the ruins in the middle of the island, but be warned of the biting
- ants and mosquitos! Transport otherwise is well taken care of by
- taxis or feet.
- Others have responded positively to your Hotel Barracuda inquiry,
- but it looked quite run-down from the outside and maybe not even open
- for business to me. If you're in the mood for a good old fashion
- American hamburger and french fries while you're there, don't miss
- "The Sports Page" restaurant; be sure to bring a homegrown team jersey
- to add to their collection!
- Have fun and make new diving friends,
- Douglas & PJ Jones
