- Scout Sunday - Oath and Law for Catholics and Protestants
-
- The following shell archive contains five files I used to fulfill my
- Wood Badge ticket for promoting Scout Sunday as part of my Service to Others.
- I used these files when I contacted the local religious organizations in my
- community that sponsor a Scout troop.
-
- The files were created using Appleworks, and written out to an
- unformatted text file for uploading. You will have to format them and
- add your own emphasis (bolding, etc.)

- XThe Scout Law
- X
- XA Responsive Reading
- X
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Trustworthy.
- X
- XLeader: Character is what a man is. Reputation is what people think
- Xabout him. A youth of character is worthy of trust. No one
- Xis worthy of trust who does not recognize his dignity and
- Xthe dignity of all men as children of God.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Loyal.
- X
- XLeader: Because our first loyalty is to God, a Scout is loyal to all
- Xwhom loyality is due - his parents, his church, and his
- Xcountry.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Helpful.
- X
- XLeader: Christ has told us that the good turns we do for others he
- Xwill consider as dont to him. Our motive, or reason why we
- Xare helpful, is that we see Christ in everybody. If our Lord
- Xwas willing to die for everybody, a Scout centainly should
- Xbe ready to render help. The whole Scout program give us an
- Xopportunity to be helpful.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Friendly.
- X
- XLeader: The basis and motive of this point of the Law is Christian
- Xcharity. We are all children of the same father, and
- Xbrothers of Jesus Christ. Recognizing this, a Scout should
- Xbe a friend to all, and a brother to every other Scout.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Courteous.
- X
- XLeader: A Scout should respect the image of God in everyone. The
- Xmeaninf of love as a Scout should be taken from the words of
- XChrist himself -- "I have come not to be served, but to
- Xserve."
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Kind.
- X
- XLeader: This point of the Law refers mostly to animals. They exist
- Xfor our use. They have live and feeling and God has given
- Xthem to us as a truse; as such we must use them well, never
- Xabusing or mistreating them.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Obedient.
- X
- XLeader: Jesus Christ gave us an example of perfect obedience
- Xthroughout his life. This will be a difficult point of the
- XLaw for a Scout to keep because it will mean discipline and
- Xgiving up his own will at times. He should obey, not because
- Xthe command pleases him, but because the one giving it has
- Xthe right to do so, is someone in authority, and is right in
- Xdoing so. Disobedience brought death and sin into the world;
- Xobedience brought our salvation. Real victory comes from
- Xobedience -- first to God, then to all he has placed in
- Xauthority as long as they deserve our obedience.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Cheerful.
- X
- XLeader: Joy should be one of the marks of a child of God. A Scout
- Xwill have joy in his heart and manifest if outwardly by his
- Xcheerful manner.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Thrifty.
- X
- XLeader: Thrift teaches self-respect, making us unwilling to be a
- Xburden to others. Far from being a burden, we are able by
- Xthrift to help them. A Scout is deeply concerned with
- Xpreserving our natural resources.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Brave.
- X
- XLeader: He can face danger even if he is afraid. He has courage to
- Xstand for what he thinks is right even if others scorn him.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Clean.
- X
- XLeader: He keeps clean in body and thought; stands for clean speech,
- Xclean sport, clean habits; and travels with a clean crowd.
- X
- XScouts: A Scout is Reverent.
- X
- XLeader: He is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious
- Xduties and respects the convictions of others in manners of
- Xcustom and religion.

- XThe Scout Oath
- X
- XA Responsive Reading
- X
- X
- XScouts: On my honor, I will do my best...
- X
- XLeader: Our Honor is a quality we possess because of our
- Xdignity as human beings and children of God. Our
- X'best' means to give all we have. It means to keep
- Xstriving to do what we know is right, and in the Oath
- Xit means we will try to be good Scouts by fulfilling
- Xour Scout duties as expressed in the Scout Law.
- X
- XScouts: To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the
- XScout Law...
- X
- XLeader: Our duty to God and country means chiefly two things:
- Xobedience and loyalty. The duties we owe to the
- Xchurch, to our country, to parents, to one another, and
- Xto ourselves come from some command of God. The Scout
- XLaw sums up all the qualities a Scout should have and
- Xwithout which he can not be a good Scout.
- X
- XScouts: To help other people at all times...
- X
- XLeader: Our Lord told us that love of our neighbor was like the
- Xfirst law of love of GOD. Early Christians were known
- Xby the love they had for one another. Real Christian
- Xcharity or love prompts us to want to help others at
- Xall times. Our Scout training will give us skills and
- Xknowledge that will put us in a better position to do
- Xthis.
- X
- XScouts: To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and
- Xmorally straight.
- X
- XLeader: Scouting offers us many opportunities to grow strong
- Xphysically. To be alert and ready requires us to give
- Xspecial care to those gifts of soul - intellect and
- Xwill - that make us unto God. 'Morally Straight' means
- Xwe must try to know what is right and true, and to love
- Xwhat is good and choose it.

- XDear ^<Contact>:
- X
- XI am a Scout Leader in the Daniel Webster Council for the Boy
- XScouts of America (BSA), and have volunteered to coordinate the
- Xobservance of Scout Sunday in the Nashua area. I am writing to
- Xencourage and support a Scout Sunday service this February 7th.
- X
- XEach year in February, BSA Anniversary Month, the Boy Scouts of
- XAmerica encourages the celebration of Scouth Sabbath or Scout
- XSunday. This event is highlighted by the presentation of religious
- Xemblems.
- X
- XThe following are some of the ways you can support Scout Sunday
- Xand strengthen the religious committment of Scouts and Scouters:
- X
- X1. Announce February 7th as Scout Sunday in your bulletin.
- X2. Ask all Scouts and Scouters to attend service in uniform on
- Xthat date.
- X3. Arrange with your affiliated Scouts to present any religious
- Xawards on Scout Sunday.
- X4. You may use the enclosed responsive readings.
- X
- XAlthough the BSA does not define what constitutes belief in God or
- Xpractice of religion. It is felt that religious instruction is a
- Xfunction of parents or the religious institution to which a member
- Xmay belong. One of the purposes of Scouting is to bring the boy
- Xcloser to the ideals of his faith and the ideals of his country:
- X
- X"The Boy Scouts of America Maintains that no boy can grow
- Xinto the best kind of citizen without recognizing his
- Xobligation to God...." (Article IX, Section1, Charter and
- XBylaws of the Boy Scouts of America).
- X
- XThank you in advance for supporting Scout Sunday. If you have any
- Xquestions or need further information, please feel free to call me
- Xat my home 595-8240.
- X
- XSincerely,
- X
