- And now for the "rest of the story"..
- Actually, last year a new troop was formed in our town. To seed this troop,
- 11 of our 13 4th grade Webelo's that were 10 and a half years of age (all had
- earned Arrow of Light) were graduated to the new troop. We had already lost
- all 6 of our 5th grade webelos for the same reason. (I'm not commenting on
- whether or not I agree with this, but we had no choice). Given that the
- majority of the new troop never went through the formal Webelo's program and
- were immediately put into a high impact camping environment (designed for
- all to reach the level required to attend A.P.Hill), I'm surprised that they
- had as much retention as we did.
-
- To my knowledge, 100% of the 5th graders are still in the Troop and 8 of the
- 11 4th graders remain. Of the three that dropped, two were discipline problems
- throughout Cubs and couldn't accept the more rigorous discipline from their
- patrol leaders (actually, I thought they would drop earlier from Cubs). The
- other was bent on self destruction. He had more scars on his legs from Cub
- activities that when the rangers finally carried him out of a National Park in
- Maine on a stretcher with another large gash in his leg, his parents pulled
- him out of the program in the interest of saving his life. So our retention
- rate is approximately 82%. The scoutmaster is very talented and makes
- scouting his "profession" and building houses his occupation. He has
- even pulled kids back that previously have dropped from Cubs and he has pulled
- kids in with no prior scouting experience. They keep them interested with
- at least one weekend program per month, 12 months a year. Remains to be seen
- how many will make Eagle.
