Actually, the correct name of the compound is Nitrogen Tri-iodide.
However, the name Ammonium Tri-iodide out to more then tell you how to make it.
If not, here's how. Mix Ammonia and iodide crystals. Nitrogen Tri-iodide forms on the surface of the crystals. Let it settle, then scrape out the black goo, spread it out on something and let it dry (this take a while). When it is FULLY
dry, it will explode well. you may even here it crackle on its own every once in a while. It is shock sensitive. throw something at it, poke at it, or if you are really dumb, kick it. The explosion is followed by a puff of niffty purple smoke. Exposed, the explosion is small, but inject it into some small crevice, and it will do a good job of shooting a key out of a lock like a bullet.
Now there is one good trick to up the bang for your buck. Adding potassium iodide to the mixture will cause it to dry very rapidy when you take the goo out of the excess ammonia. However, if your not careful, it will dry while you work with it and BOOM! It really does boost the explosion though. Houshold ammonia is of course used, although iodine crystals can get expensive at a pharmacy. Use water purification iodine, or better yet, find a chemist friend who can get reagent grade stuff free.
