- Well, for any bunny owners who are interested, Peanut the used-to-be-female
- holland lop is now an "it". We procrastinated in getting it done, so she was
- a little less than two when the surgery occurred. The vet said other than
- having a lot of fat around her ovaries, the surgery went fine. She wouldn't eat
- for the first day, so the vet tried to force feed her applesauce (which was
- a disaster - there was applesauce everywhere). I guess there was much
- growling and lunging, and the vet said she was "feisty" when we came to pick
- her up. The vet gave us a collar, but Peanut seems to pretty much be ignoring
- the incision, so we are leaving the collar off and watching her closely.
-
- According to the house rabbit handbook, she is supposed to be confined to
- her cage for five (??? is that right) days, so we will try to do that, but
- she will be a very angry bunny about being left in her cage that long.
-
- Some questions:
- 1) How do we decide if we should use the collar? She has sniffed around
- down there a few times, and maybe even licked (it is hard to tell), but
- I would guess that is normal. Should we only strap on the collar if she
- spends more than, what, five? minutes with her head down there?
-
- 2) Do we really need to keep her in the cage for five days? How secure are
- the sutures (or glue or whatever they use), and when will it be OK for her
- to jump around and be a regular little hell-raiser?
-
- 3) When is she "out of the woods"? When can we stop worrying that she is
- going to keel over any second?
-
- 4) Our other rabbit, Spanky, has a runny eye - we just noticed it last night.
- The fur in the corner of his eye is wet, but not pussy or anything, and the
- eye looks fine. His nose isn't runny, he isn't listless, and he is eating
- and pooping up a storm. Anything to worry about? We think maybe he scratched
- his eye when he was scratching his hear...
-
- OK, that is it. Sorry about being so verbose. Thanks in advance for any advice.
