- Hey, I know nothing about this Mr. Dante, and while I couldn't condone the
- deception, at the same time, if he were capable of trashing (as Steve says)
- other people's martial arts styles (in combat) then I suppose he should be
- respected. Of course he may also have been a jerk, but this has nothing to
- do with technique.
-
- Recently I met a man from San Francisco who told me that as a high school
- punk, he and his friends would stand outside the martial arts schools and
- challenge the black and brown belts as they came out after class. It was
- rather odd listening to him describe how these (poor) guys would come out, and
- as they were challenged would typically behave "..humbly" and he said, "then
- we'd just start pushing someone into him and the fight would start..." When I
- asked him who won, he said that they always won, and that these guys were
- never ready for a poke in the eye, etc... I found the conversation remarkably
- morbid, but instructive. I always seek out the insane teachers because I hope
- that I am ready for the non-standard nature of real attack. Of course none of
- us knows how well prepared we are--not really. And you can never account for
- the circumstance where you turn the corner and everything goes black suddenly.
- Oh well.
