  24. Whoa, folks.  Let's not forget that the mere PRESENCE of a gun helps
  25. to deter criminals.  This is true even when they arrive in force.

  27. Of course, your mileage may vary.  If the home invaders come in with
  28. guns drawn, and you start shooting at them, they'll probably just
  29. shoot you.  But maybe not.

  33. Someone I met had to defend himself against a street gang a few years
  34. ago.  He got out of his car, and quite suddenly found that he was
  35. surrounded by a minimum of TWENTY gang members, who had been hiding
  36. in and around the parking lot waiting specifically for him.  (He'd
  37. prevented one from raping his daughter a couple of days before.)

  39. He pulled his .38, fired three shots at the attempted-rapist, only
  40. one of which hit, and the gang halted.  Nobody wanted to be second.

  42. Needless to say, the police came by and arrested HIM for carrying
  43. a concealed weapon, one reason being (according to witnesses) that
  44. there was no way they could fit twenty gang members into their
  45. patrol car.  BTW, the gang members who stayed were found armed
  46. ONLY with clubs, knives, chains, and so on -- it's not known how
  47. well they were searched, or whether they were searched at all,
  48. or whether any had fled, or (if so) whether the ones who fled
  49. were armed with anything heavier.  These were just the weapons
  50. that were in view.

  52. After a long court battle, a divorce, and lots of legal expenses,
  53. not to mention permanently losing that gun, he got the court monkey
  54. off his back.  I don't know whether he was allowed to keep his
  55. Illinois gun card or not (or if he had one to begin with).  He
  56. was not a happy person when I met him (a few months after the
  57. courts had gotten through with him).
