  15. I have a gun design that I would like to build.  Unfortunately,
  16. I know nothing about what steels to use, how the pieces should
  17. be hardened, how much pounding the different parts will have to
  18. endure, or how the different bearing surfaces should be treated
  19. to minimize wear on the less-easily-replaceable parts.

  21. Can anyone point me in the direction of some introductory books?
  22. If they're directly oriented toward firearms, that would be most
  23. excellent, although just about anything would do.  Something on
  24. building car engines from scratch (no junkyard parts) would be
  25. perfect.  Engineering texts would be fine.

  29. Some design information, for the curious:

  31. It's basically a Gatling gun, with a few quirks.  I've shown it
  32. to a couple of people, and the consensus is that as long as I
  33. build it strong enough to stand the explosions, it should work.
  34.  
  35. Two concerns are about the bolts and the track they ride on.
  36. (1) will the track get dented from the bolts pounding back at
  37. each shot, and (2) will the bolts or the track get worn down
  38. by sliding around against each other all the time?
  39.  
  40. The cartridge will be whatever is HARSHEST on guns among the
  41. standard short auto cartridges (.22LR, 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP),
  42. since one goal is to make calibers interchangeable, and
  43. overengineering for .22 is preferable to blowing up with 9mm.
  44. Design life will have to be in the hundreds-of-thousands of
  45. rounds, naturally.

  47. Barrel-wise, I'll just be using T/C Contender barrels;  the
  48. bolts and magazine adapters will have to be interchangeable
  49. as well, however.
