- ##Has anyone ever used or even seen the SSP-91 handgun made by Magnum
- ##Research? It is pictured in the back of the 1993 Annual edition
- ##of Guns & Ammo. It seems to be available in several calibers including
- ##.308. I was wondering if it would make a good long range target
- ##handgun. Also, how do you chamber a round in this gun? It looks as
- ##though it has a rather unconventional receiver.

- #I've handled one, but haven't shot it. The design is a turn-breech.
- #You swivel the rear of the pistol to one side to load it. The breech
- #block is massive, but I'm suspicious that the hinge will loosen with
- #use. Balance is nice, however, and the price is attractive.

- I've shot a friend's SSP-91 in .30-06. My only complaint is that the
- grips (or would that be 'stock'? :-) ) is made from a very hard noncompliant
- black plastic. If it doesn't fit your hand perfectly (it won't), the
- hard plastic nails your hand pretty hard (compressing the flesh between
- the plastic and your hand bones).
-
- There really isn't a whole lot of recoil (as in an aft shove), but there
- is extreme and uncontrollable muzzle flip. Shooting one-handed, it tended
- to rotate up and left 45 degrees. Muzzle blast and flash are impressive.
- We were shooting American Eagle 150gr FMJBT and some old surplus
- military ball; note that these are fairly mild loads compared to what you
- could be shooting (i.e., using either heavier bullets or hotter loads).
-
- Suprisingly, the trigger was quite nice. (brand new out of the box).
-
- If you wanted to shoot accurately at long distances (which is probably why
- you're buying this in the first place, right?), you'd probably want to
- look at free floating the barrel. From the factory, it has a straight
- untapered barrel on a one piece stock. I do not know how it is bedded,
- so I can't say how easy this would be.
