- The euphemism I've heard from pit bosses in more than one Reno casino is
- "good player". That means a card counter. I've been labeled as a "good
- player" in a couple of places even though, strictly speaking, I don't
- count, using what Steve calls a "gestalt count" (keep track of the cards,
- but don't maintain a running total.)
-
- Please note that I still play for comps, without undue heat or real fear
- of being barred. I certainly don't think I'm "slitting my own throat".
- The casinos are more concerned with the amount of action that you give
- them than whether you win or lose (at least in the less than 4-digit
- amounts I'd be talking about). Someone who tries to hide their counting,
- bet variation, and identity arouses more suspicion (and heat) in my
- experience.
-
- 25 years ago, when we (I'm speaking here of my friends and I who have been
- to Reno innumerable times on gambling trips) were being furtive, looking
- and acting guilty as thieves, we got much more attention from the pit
- bosses. Nowadays, we hand our ID cards over to the pit boss, smile,
- introduce ourselves, etc., and let them pay for our rooms, meals and
- shows.
-
- Of course, we also play a lot more craps these days than we used to :-)
