  16. A friend recently sent me a bunch of stamps to look through, and amoung them
  17. was a California revenue stamp, which I know nothing about.  Any information
  18. (including a rough idea of rarity and value) would be greatly appreciated.

  20. The stamp is definative size, and generally resembles the low values of the
  21. US revenue issue of 1862-71 (the first one).  It is printed in dark purple ink,
  22. with a "banner" along each side and a "1" in a circle at each corner.  The
  23. banners read:

  25. top: "California"
  26. bottom: "State Revenue"
  27. left: "One"
  28. right: "Dollar"
  29.  
  30. In the center of the stamp is the word "One" over "$".  The stamp appears to
  31. be cancelled with a circular cancel, but the cancel is faint and no details
  32. can be made out.
