- A friend recently sent me a bunch of stamps to look through, and amoung them
- was a California revenue stamp, which I know nothing about. Any information
- (including a rough idea of rarity and value) would be greatly appreciated.
-
- The stamp is definative size, and generally resembles the low values of the
- US revenue issue of 1862-71 (the first one). It is printed in dark purple ink,
- with a "banner" along each side and a "1" in a circle at each corner. The
- banners read:
-
- top: "California"
- bottom: "State Revenue"
- left: "One"
- right: "Dollar"
-
- In the center of the stamp is the word "One" over "$". The stamp appears to
- be cancelled with a circular cancel, but the cancel is faint and no details
- can be made out.
