- Could it be shellac? Collectors used to put it on to preserve their
- coins. I don't know how to get it off, but acetone probably would
- work. You can buy acetone (NOT nail polish remover) cheaply at your
- local hardware store. Acetone is flammable so use it in a well-ventilated
- area.

- Several collectors have recommended it to me. It lifts off a lot of
- stuff without affecting the metal or toning. Therefore, acetone falls
- into the neutral cleaning solvent category. As long as you don't rub
- the coin, this method is not considered "cleaning" in the bad sense.

- Disclaimer: Although I have a gallon of acetone in my garage, I haven't
- used it on my coins yet because I'm lazy. However, I have used it to
- remove unwanted glue and varnish from other things.
