-
- 8 x 40 means a magnification of 8 and the diameter of the
- objective lens is 40mm. For birding, the binoculars be a
- minimum of 7 power and a maximum of 10x and the objective should
- be at least 4 and preferably 5 times the power but no larger.
-
- Make sure the binoculars are center focusing and have fully
- coated optics. They should not show rainbows or double images
- when you look through them and the image should be in clear focus
- from edge to edge. Objects at the edge of the image should not
- be distorted.
-
- If you wear eyeglasses, make sure the binoculars have fold back
- rubber eyecups.
-
- Generally, when it comes to binoculars, you get what you pay for.
