- >>What are the unusual (and RARELY USED) items people carry when they
- >>go *heavy* weight backpacking?
-
- Let's see... on the A.T. last spring I spotted
-
- - a lawn chair *and* a portable color television (carried by a member of the
- Sierra Club's thru-hiking contingent, no less!)
- - MRE's for food for each meal
- - A "spare" gallon bottle of water (yes, full)
- - A set of external speakers for a walkman
- - A gallon of bourbon and a case of beer (in the same pack... who needs food?)
- - a telescope, complete with tripod
- - Enough changes of clothing to outfit an entire troop of boy scouts twice over
- (OK, little exaggeration, but, do I *really* need more than what I'm wearing
- and maybe a set of fleece to wear in camp?)
- - A spare water filter (just in case the Katadyn blows out...)
- - One of those vinyl pool-mattresses to float in ponds (in addition to the
- thermarest they used to sleep on)
-
- And the topper...
-
- - A 100' heavy-duty extension cord (in the Whites!!! I never did get an
- explanation for that one... and they were out for a week!)
-
- Actually, I do like a little luxury when I pack... s'not unusual for me to pack
- 50+ pounds (including 7 days of food), but I do *use* all of the stuff when I'm
- out, too. I could live without some of it (like the reading material) but I
- don't *want* to!
