A year or two ago, there was an (highly controversial) article in Backpacker by some guy who claimed that for most people, it was dumb to take food on a backpack trip. His point was that most people carry a little excess weight all the time anyway, that periodic fasting is a time-tested tradition in many cultures, that our genes provide built in support for fasting, as a result of our species' hunter-gatherer origins, and that almost anyone could thrive, even benefit, from a week with no food.
So the ultimate lightweight backpack trip is to leave the food, stove, pots, etc. home.
I haven't personally tried it yet, but intend to.
Talk to your doctor first, and if it kills you, blame him, not me.
