- I heard in three different places (two magazine articles and on Car Talk
- radio) that the current 6-speed manual transmission in Corvette cars
- restricts access to 2nd gear at certain times. That is, at certain (low?)
- throttle levels, the driver is prevented from shifting from 1st to 2nd,
- and must shift from 1st to 4th, for example. On Car Talk it was stated
- that the restriction is in place so that the car would not require the
- buyer to pay a gas guzzler tax. Presumably the engine has enough power to
- allow such gear skipping. Maybe the 2nd gear lockout would occur at high
- throttle levels and not low throttle levels, but even in that case the
- restriction would be significant to me (or maybe even more so since high
- throttle is when power is desired).
-
- Does anyone know about this issue, and most importantly, if it is true,
- then is it also in place (or will it be in place) in the new Camaro Z28
- which has a similar LT-1 engine to the one in the Corvette, and a 6-speed
- transmission? A salesman at a Chevrolet dealer said that there was no
- such restriction.
-
- Anyone else interested in the Camaro? Versus the Mitsubishi 3000GT-VR4?
-
- Thanks,
- Gary
