- This was done first for the Audi 5000 in the late '70s. The
- dialog was something like, "Our engineers are so confident in
- our new car that they not only stand behind them, they'll stand
- in front of them..." --rather humorous when one thinks about
- the sudden acceleration farce. Actually, i am shocked that no one dug
- up that old ad and sold it to the media.
-
- Another favorite of mine (and another Audi ad) was one in which a
- BMW and a Mercedes were parked beside each other, facing the camera,
- with a gap between them big enough for another car. In the background,
- a third car is rushing towards the camera (aimed between the to cars in
- the foregraound). The first instinct is to think, Ok, so they're
- going to pull the Audi up between the BMW and Merc. and make their
- remark about them all being in the same league. --but just before the
- Audi gets to the empty space, it spins 360 deg, comming back
- into perfect alignment with the empty space, and *then* pulls into
- it without really slowing down. I'd love to know how many times
- they had to practice that one with boxes painted on the road first...
