- |>Anyone know how much money is spent [annually] by the automakers on "concept
- |>vehicles?"
-
- Quite a bit, but it varies depending on what kind of concept car
- you are talking about. Some are empty shells to try out body design ideas in
- full size; others are new bodies grafted onto existing cars; while others
- are full ground-up one-of-a-kind designs. An example of the later is
- GM's CERV III vehicle that is a driveable concept car used as a testbed
- for advanced drive-by-wire experiments including 4-wheel steer-by-wire,
- fully active suspension with integrated traction control and all wheel
- drive. Cars like this cost easily in the millions of dollars.

- |>Vehicles that never see production??
-
- Very few concept cars ever go into production. But many of the features
- do appear in later production cars. A different category is "pilot" and
- "prototype" cars which are intended to demonstrate the planned design
- for a production vehicle.

- Concept cars can be quite useful if they are built to explore a
- well-defined question(s). If a concept car is merely an exercise
- in showing off the design staff's artist abilities, then it may have
- value in other ways, but doesn't contribute much that can be called
- research or engineering.
