- The same could be said for Dolby SR-D
- (six channel digital sound for 35mm and 70mm motion picture release
- prints). Given the need for six discrete channels and the limited
- bandwith available, lossy compression is almost inevitable. I've heard
- the SR-D format in the Dolby Labs screening room, and, while it seems
- impressive, I've not had the chance to hear the same material
- uncompressed, so I can't really say how it compares. The AC-3
- compression scheme is available outside the SR-D format, though, so
- informal tests might be possible.
-
- What's also interesting is how good the
- regular Dolby SR analogue cinema sound format sounded in the Dolby Labs
- screening room. Obviously, we can't expect most commercial theatres to
- have a noise level of NC-12, but they (Dolby) stressed that the
- conventional analogue format can be better than people tend to give it
- credit for.
-
- It seems that there will often be
- situations where compression, even lossy compression, is needed. I'm
- not altogether convinced that digital tape decks are one of them,
- though. Given that prerecorded material is available on CD, and DAT
- machines are widely available for less $$$$ than DCC decks (+ are *much*
- more widely accepted in pro situations), the motives behind the DCC and
- MD are highly questionable.
