- As a fancier of computer art (music and video), I find that I
- greatly enjoy watching/listening to compilations of these works on
- laser disks that have resently become widely available. Many of
- these LDs have Dolby encoded sound tracks. In the interest of
- achieving a more dynamic presentation of these works (max 'gork'
- factor), I am looking to increase my current surround sound
- systems amplification capabilities.
-
- Briefly, my current configuration is based on a Pioneer VSX D1S
- pre-amps/amps along with a 100 WPC power amp (for AR sub-woofer).
- My speaker system is comprised of Definitive Technology BP10s and
- a C1 (CLR/1000 on order) up front, BP2s in the rear. I've
- augmented this basic 5 channel set-up to provide quasi 7 channel
- ambience with a pair of Acoustat 2+2s and a Trans Nova up
- front/side but that is another story. I like the DS1 A/V
- switching and signal control capabilities and intend to retain it
- for the near term. However, as I said, I would like to upgrade to
- amplifiers with more 'punch' than the D1S can now provide. My
- system is set-up in a 28 x 16 room with an 18 foot cathedral
- ceiling (in a 3000 sq ft open contemporary home). I can achieve
- desired volume levels in this environment but would like to do so
- with a bit more 'authority'.
-
- So...I have briefly auditioned an a/d/s 6 channel bridgeable power
- amp that appealed to me - nice power handling, modular design,
- right price - but alas, it is no longer at my disposal to 'touch
- and feel'. I believe that it was in essence 6 100 WPC mono amps
- stacked one atop another. If so, I would like to configure it
- bridged as (3) 200 WPC x 1 (across the front). I would then use
- the 135 WPC x 2 D1S mains for the rear channels and continue to
- drive the Onkyo Integra from the D1S sub-woofer output. BTW: As
- this output is a 200 hz low-pass I feed it through a passive 150
- hz crossover to achieve a lower (but not low enough for my liking)
- sub-woofer drive signal. I would like my new 'front' amp
- configuration to include a variable low/high-pass crossover
- centered around 80 hz...it seems that I read about such a
- multi-channel amp somewhere lately.
-
- Anyway, I believe that the a/d/s nomenclature was PH6 or some
- such... Anyone out there have any additional information -
- specifications, possible mail order sources, et al?
-
- Any other suggestions in the way of power amplifier choices that
- would give me a decent ~200 WPC 'high current' source for the
- BP10s (can get down to ~5 ohms) and CLR/1000 for ~$1500 or maybe
- even less :-) :-)? Thanks in advance /bob
