- Thanks for the note. This is, of course, only a side issue. It's
- nice to know that this many people are getting on. Freenet has not
- seen much from the 'public' yet, though, but mostly the telecom
- community that already know all about 'init strings' and MNP's.

- [side/irrelevant question]
- I'm curious if these are people using old VC terminals, or
- people with PC's on campus-net that are going through the starmaster?

- Now, this is the type of response that I've been WANTING to get (If
- only I can now get similar style responses from the board) There is an
- extremely large difference between 'We acknowledge the problem, but do
- not currently have the funds to deal with the problem' and 'the
- problem does not exist and we have no plans on dealing with it even
- if the money does become available'.
-
- I myself hope to see the following:
-
- 3 phone lines:
- 780-3733 with Generic 2400bps modems that are as 'non-picky' as can be made physically possible.
- 780-4263 with the existing Gandalf 2400bps modems
- 780-3745 with any high-speed V.32bis modems (This can become very
- realistic if Freenet takes off as I very much hope it will).
-
- Each 'modem type' would get a different phone number. The main
- 'FREE' number having as generic and friendly a modem on it will make a
- very large difference in the acceptance of the Freenet by some of the
- non techies. (BTW: Contrary to popular opinion that only the 'techie'
- people are buying modems that would have problems with the Gandalf
- modems, a quick servay of local computer stores has quickly shown that
- the hottest selling modems are 2400/V.42bis/FAX modems [embarrasingly,
- mostly card-modems for Intel boxes, but the compatability issue is
- still there]).
