- I know the 'technical' issues, but they're irrelevant in my mind,
- and in the minds of non-technical people that I have to try to explain
- why they need special dial strings to contact freenet. Since I
- advertise my Freenet address all over, and offer myself for technical
- support, I get a LOT of questions - The MAJOR issue with the freenet
- that I've seen so far are modem incompatabilities.

- This won't affect the modem problem, only the 'bits' issue which is
- more easy to explain (hit ';') than the confusion of modem specific
- ways to turn off error correction and any other advanced modem feature.

- Again, these 'bits' are totally irrelevant to the issue at hand.

- Where did you get that number from? The number of logins? Do you
- realize how many of them are from on campus? How many people are
- dialing Carleton's 9600bps lines (Which have modems which don't
- require special dial strings/etc)? There is really no way for you to
- know how many people are actually using those 4 phone lines.
-
- Maybe it's because as a support person I only hear when things go
- wrong, but so far I've heard a lot of problems that could be solved
- quite easily.
-
- Eithor way - The Freenet isn't a service oriented just to 'techie'
- people, it is a service that should be oriented more and more towards
- the 'new telecom user' to try to encourage more people to get
- involved. The discussions so far of "Oh, it's easy, just turn off
- your error correction" is fine and dandy for a telecom enthusiest, but
- is translated to "Felbert flange your grample grumpet" when talking to
- the type of user the Freenet should be seeking to get interested in
- the project.
-
- It's hard to get NEW (As opposed to anyone who would be capable of
- reading this message at the moment ;-) people interested in telecomunications
- involved when there is a 'trick' to making that first step and
- calling.
