- THAT'S the mistake that they made in CO... by the time they tried to
- correct the mistake being slung out by the Nazis, it was too late. It
- has to be a concerned effort from day one. I think this is especially
- important for any publicized rallies and demonstrations. "Gay Rights"
- is short and sweet, but doesn't explain anything. The outsiders and
- fence sitters don't seem to equate "Gay Rights" properly with
- "recognition and protection of equal rights to gays and lesbians."
- Some tend to think it means that we want the right to do the nasty
- anyplace and anytime we want.
-
- The mistake in Colorado was made by a majority of the people who voted
- in the referendum.
-
- Sure it's important for us to define our own terms and not to let
- those who'd deny us what's rightfully ours define those terms for us.
- But that doesn't mean giving up our language and its historical uses.
- This "gay rights" phrase has been around for a while. Its meaning is
- simple and clear: gay people have rights, too. Getting "civil
- rights" out there has some utility because of the great struggle of
- the fifities and sixties. It might not hurt to appropriate it.
- Pairing up the two, "gay rights" and "civil rights," might be
- effective, and it's a hell of a lot less verbose than "equal rights
- for lesbians, bisexuals, gays, etc."
-
- And what is it about the nasty that makes it so bad to do it most
- anywhere and anytime, anyway? If we're ever gonna have our rights,
- those people who aren't us are gonna have to adjust to the fact that
- we actually touch each other's so-called private parts. And have a
- good time doing it.
