- Depends on the kind of story. For SF or fantasy, you go to the magazines and
- maybe the editors of anthologies. Other genres have similar magazines, though
- mystery and romance are the most available. For an experimental or mainstream
- story, try the academic quarterlies and "little" magazines. Once in a great
- while, a big magazine like the Atlantic will take fiction from an unknown
- writer (they used to feature "Atlantic firsts"). Guess how often it happens;
- then go spend the postage on a lottery ticket instead.
