- When I was a young lad, one of my heroes and mentors was the mystery writer
- Stanley Ellin. His method of writing was unusual--he would think out the
- general structure of the story, and then write page one. He would rewrite
- page one until he had it just the way he wanted it. Then, and only then,
- would he move on to page two...and so on. I could never do it, but then I
- could never write stories like "The Specialty of the House" or novels like
- The Eighth Circle. And even monsters of productivity like Evan Hunter were in
- awe of both Stan's work and his method of creating it.
