- Well, this was sufficiently provocative that I bothered to count...

- This is only an approximation since I was counting IP addresses and
- not actual machines. For me, I am willing to believe that the
- addresses are a rough but reasonable indication of how many machines
- each side really has.
-
- It has been suggested that the original poster might have rigged the
- domain name server to *pretend* there are many more machines than
- really exist! 8-) Go ahead and ping(1) the addresses one by one if
- you're *really* cynical. If you're really, *really* cynical, one
- could argue that the gateways have been reprogrammed to return pings
- from piles of fake addresses!
-
- If anyone wants to go to utexas personally to count machines, I'll go
- if my flight and hotel are paid for, and if I have to be counting for
- less than 2 hours of the day. Note that we have to count all the
- machines simultaneously so no one moves machines around while we're
- counting! |8-)
-
- Finally, we need to dig through all the paperwork at utexas to ensure
- that none of the machines are "borrowed" from anywhere... etc.
-
- Life gets too complicated when you're *too* cynical...
-
-
- Anyway, we lost on machines. (I wonder what all those extra machines
- are for? Campus-wide net that even goes into the dorms???) So, let's
- just change our newsgroup names and let UTexas duke it out with
- UTennessee, UTokyo, etc. before we have to do battle on those fronts
- too!
-
- No! Wait! What am I saying! Let's just buy 1300 more machines! Yeah!
