- Yesterday was the official opening of Toon Town at Disneyland and I have to
- say that now everyone with children too young for Disneyland have a place to
- go. The whole place is a hands on experiment for children. It isn't just
- a bunch more rides. There are upper limits on heights and while they SAY
- that the acorn patch and Goofy's jumping house are for 3 and up, they were
- letting some pretty young looking 3's (including Erin) in.
-
- However, what is weird is the way adults handle their children there. Here
- is a place designed for children to touch everything, climb all over it,
- run around it, push buttons, etc. And all these parents are saying, "No,
- no. Don't touch" like they're in a museum or something. This was especially
- true in Minnie and Mickey's houses. Minnie's kitchen is a gas!
-
- In Mickey's Movie Barn there are all these stacks of film cans. I mean, they
- just invite you to knock them down. And, of course, you can't. But I saw
- parents with toddlers holding them back. At one point there is a ladder
- going up to the projection room. The ladder is pitched backward so that it
- is challenging to climb. But the floor (like all the flooring in Toon Town)
- is made of crushed cork and meant to absorb falls. Well, I see the ladder
- and say "Hey, Mitchell, can you climb up there and see what's happening
- in the projection room." He climbs the ladder, but can't really see in.
- Then a man behind me tells his 3 YO, "No, no Matthew. Don't climb. That boy
- is NOT SETTING A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE!" (last part aimed at me - I looked at
- him like he was nuts and honestly think he is).
-
- So, if you go, let your kids play! It's a toddler's paradise. There are
- lots of different slides and ladders and stairs. Almost everywhere you look
- there'a a button to push that makes something happen. If you step on the
- man-hole-cover someone in the sewer yells at you "Can't you see we're working
- down here". So, if your kids liked "Afternoon Avenue", they'll LOVE Toon
- Town. Disney does it again!
