- Too many attributes so I'm cutting them rather than confusing them:
-
- >>>All children, regardless of test scores, should be encouraged to
- >>>work hard and do the best they can.
- >>
- >>This notion that hard work is what is important in learning is a
- >>horrible mistake.
- >
- >IMHO, this notion that hard work is NOT what is important in learning
- >is a horrible mistake. You want to talk about horror, putting the
- >notion in our children's heads that "there IS such a thing as a free
- >lunch, I DON'T have to work to learn" will fill our welfare roles with
- >deadbeats, our streets with dropouts, our companies with menials, and
- >our government with a bunch of self-centered tribal chieftain mentality
- >bandits. Do you think we'll learn anything from THAT?

- Balance is what is needed here. The idea that you can overcome any obstacle
- with hard work is as much a lie as the idea that you don't have to put any
- effort into anything in order to learn it.
-
- What we need to be teaching our children is to match their natural gifts
- with the right amount of "work" that they can excel in their own way. But,
- they must also recognize their own limitations, if for no other reason than
- to learn to accomodate those limitations.
-
- All the violin practice in the universe will not make a violinist out
- of someone with a tin ear, or even someone with no talent for making the
- violin sing (which was my case - technically proficient and lacking in soul).
- But, someone who is gifted will benefit from the extra work and will learn
- that through hard work in an area where natural talent leads is productive.
-
- My natural talents lie in writing. I write fiction for a hobby. And I can
- tell when a story isn't working because it is too hard to write; it takes
- too much work. The good stories write themselves. The good characters speak
- their own lines. Working too hard is an indicator that I am going in the wrong
- direction.
-
- There is every reason to debunk the myth that hard work is the key to
- anything. Sometimes it isn't. And sometimes there is a free lunch.
