  15. It has been suggested that the Etiquette Guidelines which are posted
  16. as part of the bi-monthly "Welcome to Misc.kids/FAQ File Index"
  17. article be rewritten and expanded.  I am therefore including a draft
  18. of the revision for comments and suggestions.  Please feel free to
  19. e-mail me your suggestions or post them as you see fit.  I am hoping
  20. to finish all revisions by the time of the next posting of the
  21. "Welcome" article (Feb. 1).  So, if you have anything to say, please
  22. do so quickly.  Thanks.

  26.         *** Etiquette Guidelines ***

  28. Most of the guidelines here are the same as in
  29. news.announce.newusers.  However, they bear repeating from time to
  30. time.

  33. o  Please respond via e-mail whenever possible; if the
  34.    original poster was soliciting advice/information, s/he should
  35.    post a summary to the net.  This helps cut down on net traffic.
  36.  
  37. o  Please read all follow-ups before posting one of your own;
  38.    in many cases, someone else has already covered the same point.
  39.  
  40. o  Please limit the amount of material included from previous
  41.    postings as much as possible, and try to be concise.  Certainly,
  42.    .signatures should be excised.  Remember that most of the audience 
  43.    for misc.kids are busy parents.  However, please make sure you 
  44.    include enough of the original article so as to make your follow-up 
  45.    sensible.  (For example, follow-ups such as "I totally agree!" with 
  46.    no material included from the previous article make no sense at all, 
  47.    due to the nature of news readers.)

  49. o  Please watch your attributions carefully; avoid misquotes and 
  50.    misconstructions.

  52. o  Please avoid cross-postings to other newsgroups unless you are
  53.    absolutely sure there is relevance to the other group(s).  There
  54.    is usually nothing that will spark a flame war faster than to 
  55.    cross-post an article to groups such as soc.men, soc.women, or 
  56.    alt.sex.  If you feel you must cross-post or respond to
  57.    a cross-posting, please delete misc.kids from the
  58.    Newsgroups line as soon as the relevance to this
  59.    newsgroup disappears.

  61. o  Please check your Subject line carefully!  If you are starting a
  62.    new thread, do not use the standard follow-up command.  (If you
  63.    aren't sure about how to post a new article, read some help
  64.    articles, or read news.announce.newusers (strongly recommended
  65.    reading for any new netter anyway).)  Similarly, if you want folks
  66.    to read your article, and especially, if you want people to offer
  67.    advice/comments, tailor your Subject line accordingly.  This is a
  68.    very busy newsgroup, and Subject lines that are vague might not
  69.    catch the eye of the very people who might have something to
  70.    offer.  For example, if you have questions about breastfeeding 
  71.    and sibling rivalry, please take the time to write two separate 
  72.    articles with appropriate Subject lines.

  74. o  While there is a newsgroup (alt.kids-talk) for non-adults to
  75.    participate in, comments from children and teens are very welcome
  76.    in this newsgroup.

  78. o  Please refrain from name-calling, tantrums or other hysterics--
  79.    we get enough of that from our children :-).
