- My son is 3.5 yrs old and is a dedicated thumb sucker too. In his recent
- dentist visit the dentist told him he needed to stop sucking his thumb
- because he is pulling his front teeth foward. The dentist said that things
- will realign when he loses his baby teeth, but if he is still sucking his
- thumb when he gets his permenant teeth, he will pull those teeth out of
- alignment. So he wants Michael to start working on stopping now, so that
- he is stopped by the time it really matters. The dentist suggested speaking
- about quitting matter of factly, explaining why and remind him, but do not
- put any values on it. (ie Michael is not "bad" for sucking his thumb, do not
- get upset about it)
- Michael sucks his thumb alot; whenever he has his blanket which he likes to
- have whenever he reads or watches TV or is upset and he sucks his thumb to
- go to sleep and often has his thumb in his mouth much of the night.
-
- At this point I am taking a low key approach, just every once and a while
- reminding him that the dentist said he needed to stop sucking his thumb.
- However, I think it will be quite awhile before he is ready to stop. I
- just hope it is before he gets his permenant teeth.
