- I posted a few days ago about my great ultrasound experience and my
- "boy" on the way!!
-
- Well, I went to the doctors yesterday and he had the official report
- from the radiologist. Basically, everything was good. I was noted
- however that the femur measurement was atleast 2 standard deviations
- below the mean. (I think that was the wording but I don't have my
- copy in front of me). He said that he did not feel this was of major
- significance because of the short stature of the father (5'1"). He
- thought something like dwarfism was highly unlikely. I recall at
- the time that the femur measured to about 23.3 weeks gestation and
- the head circumfrance, bipolar dimension (ear to ear??) and the
- belly circumfrance all measured about 25.4 weeks. I was officially
- 24.6 weeks that day. The femur was 4.1 cm and the head circum. was
- 22.9 cm (I think I got that right). So, the radiologist said that
- if further evaulation was desired a followup could be done in 4 weeks.
-
- So, the good news is I get to have another ultrasound (It was so fun!).
- I think the doctor is leaving this option open to me as he said we
- would talk about scheduling it at my next appt. in 3 weeks.
- I am sure that this is nothing to worry about, but I thought I would
- poll the net and see if anybody else had similiar findings. I suspect
- that our kids will all be on the short side, but I hope that they will
- be somewhat taller than us (I do have a tall brother, father and grandfather).
-
- The other thing my doctor mentioned was that it is good to keep close
- track because if the baby is not getting proper nutrition, then often
- the blood is diverted to the head and vital organs at the expense of
- the limbs. He also said that it is really difficult to do anything about
- this other than emphasize good nutrition. I am trying really hard to
- remember my calcium suppliments although I don't if this is a factor.
-
- I wonder if a short length (or limb length) at birth (full term) is
- indicative of a short future stature? My son Ryan was 20.5" at birth
- and is usually about the 50% for height. My husband on the other hand
- (from his baby book) fell off the charts at a very early age. And,
- at 18 months was considerably shorter (4" maybe) than Ryan was at that
- age. Since my husband was adopted we don't have a great deal to go
- on as to whether his short stature is just hereditary or if he actually
- had an organic (hormonal) reason. His birth mother was listed as 5'1"
- also, but his birth father seemed of average height. Her brother was
- listed as 5'7" and the heights were not given for any of their parents.
