- Laura, calm down, really there isn't any reason to get so upset :). I remember
- your post, and some of the responses to it. I think maybe the reason that many
- people were a bit skeptical about you proclaiming your daughter's giftedness
- was a combination of factors. One was that the first post was when she was
- about 4 months old, yes? And from what you wrote it really did sound more as
- if perhaps you were reading baby books religiously and comparing your
- daughter's development, and concluding that because she was doing some things
- earlier than the book says is "normal"...she must be gifted.
-
- To quote my dad's old phrase we weren't laughing at you, just with you (to
- which I always used to say "but *I'm* not laughing!). Frankly, each and every
- one of has probably looked at our new babies, particularly our FIRST babies,
- and secretly just known that they were incredibly bright, sensitive and
- definitely far ahead of any other baby on the planet. And that is what parents
- are supposed to do, don't you agree?? It would be a pretty sad world if we all
- sat around thinking "well, I've sure given birth to some average blob--oh well,
- maybe there is a good movie on cable tonight" :).
-
- So don't get too upset at people. It is just that a few years down the road
- you may be smiling as you watch MaryRose's younger brother/sister and recall
- how you excitedly posted that MaryRose must have been gifted to be doing then
- what you now recognize with bro/sis as perfectly well within the normal range,
- just a bit sooner.
-
- Oh, you will also probably find that your daughter will do some things faster,
- some things slower, and it all evens out in the end!
-
- Best,
- Ann Helmers
