- I agree that there are some good picks there -- but
- there are a lot of mixed signals coming out.
-
- From what I understand, Lynch recommended Body Shop last year,
- and is recommending it again this year, at half it's price.
- It's not his fault the price dropped in half. Still, if you
- had bought it last year ..
-
- There are always a lot of undertones in these Barron's
- discussions. For example, consider Chock Full of Nuts
- (which I was considering). Mario Gabelli recommended it
- (and it is in many of his funds) but the future potential
- seems to depend on so many ifs.
-
- "Other companies could get into that too?"
- "Yes, Chock Full of Nuts has to move fast ..?
- "Wouldn't they be going into competition
- with their own customers?
- "Yes, but .."
- "Is the management actively pursuing this?"
- "No, but they just have to .."
-
- I was also thinking that Eastman Kodak still looked like
- a good buy despite it's recent price run-up. But the
- interviewer asks
-
- "What's the upside?"
- " .. "
- "That's all the upside?"
- "How many shares do you have?"
- "More than a million? .."
-
- I was also thinking that Loews, Nash-Finch, and Marion
- Merrell Dow were undervalued. But, while I think they
- are safe buys, I get the feeling that they may be
- "permanently undervalued". All of the fund managers
- seem to agree that they are selling below what they are
- worth, but they also don't seem too confident that
- they will sell for more, either.
-
- "I admit there are good reasons why it sells
- for a lot less than the others. But in 5 years time .."
-
- A lot of their recommendations seem so ambiguous.
