- JE>Flemish Leading Newspaper now simultaneously available in
- JE>inkprint and Braille
- JE>=========================================================
- JE>At a press conference in Brussels, Belgium on 14 December
- JE>1992, a new initiative was announced by the Flemish
- JE>Braille Newspaper Foundation (VZW De Braillekrant).
- JE>Starting from mid-December 1992 a daily edition in Braille
- JE>of the major Belgian newspaper "De Standaard" will be
- JE>available at the same time as the ink print version sold
- JE>to the general public.
-
- JE>The overall technical feasability study for the Flemish
- JE>daily Braille Newspaper was made by InfoVisie-Vlicht, a
- JE>specialised technical consultancy group based in Leuven,
- JE>Belgium.
- JE>For the practical implementation, full support has been
- JE>given to the Braille Newspaper by the "Braille Research
- JE>Group" at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
- JE>Prof. Francois' Group developed the high speed ELEKUL 03
- JE>braille embosser, an essential part of the daily
- JE>production cycle. All text conversion and formatting
- JE>software has been provided for by ir. Jan Mennens of the
- JE>same K.U.Leuven Group.
-
- For those of you interested in such things, we have an Elekul-03 in the
- International Braille and Technology Center for the Blind. It cost about
- $42,500 and is a single sided printer that embosses at up to 300 characters per
- second. It will do up to 1000 pages per hour. It is built like a tank and its
- most unusual feature is that it prints on a continuous roll of paper, cutting it
- off into sheets as it goes. It also produces good quality Braille.
