  22. JE>At a press conference in Brussels, Belgium on 14 December
  23. JE>1992, a new initiative was announced by the Flemish
  24. JE>Braille Newspaper Foundation (VZW De Braillekrant).
  25. JE>Starting from mid-December 1992 a daily edition in Braille
  26. JE>of the major Belgian newspaper "De Standaard" will be
  27. JE>available at the same time as the ink print version sold
  28. JE>to the general public.

  31. JE>daily Braille Newspaper was made by InfoVisie-Vlicht, a
  32. JE>specialised technical consultancy group based in Leuven,
  33. JE>Belgium.
  34. JE>For the practical implementation, full support has been
  35. JE>given to the Braille Newspaper by the "Braille Research
  36. JE>Group" at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
  37. JE>Prof. Francois' Group developed the high speed ELEKUL 03
  38. JE>braille embosser, an essential part of the daily
  39. JE>production cycle. All text conversion and formatting
  40. JE>software has been provided for by ir. Jan Mennens of the
  41. JE>same K.U.Leuven Group.

  43. For those of you interested in such things, we have an Elekul-03 in the
  44. International Braille and Technology Center for the Blind.  It cost about
  45. $42,500 and is a single sided printer that embosses at up to 300 characters per
  46. second.  It will do up to 1000 pages per hour.  It is built like a tank and its
  47. most unusual feature is that it prints on a continuous roll of paper, cutting it
  48. off into sheets as it goes.  It also produces good quality Braille.
