- Jeff:
-
- This is further to my reply to you of December 8th, in which I
- quoted some material on vitiligo from the Merck Manual. Since
- then, I have found out some further information on effective
- treatments for this condition.
-
- Recently, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) aired a
- segment on their program "Marketplace" describing how some
- Canadians travel to Cuba for healthcare to obtain treatments which
- are not available either here in Canada or the U.S. The two
- conditions for treatment is offered are retinitis pigmentosa (or
- R.P. for short) and vitiligo.
-
- The treatment for R.P. is apparently successful in arresting the
- further proress of the disease, and restoring some degree of
- function.
-
- The treatment for vitiligo consists of a exposure to sunlight after
- application of a topical solution. This solution contains elements
- extracted from placental material. (I can't remember the exact
- name of the drug.) Apparently, in a large number of cases,
- significant repigmentation results from the treatment.
-
- You might wish to contact the CBC for a videotape copy of this
- program, or a transcript of it to obtain details. (I realize that
- travel to Cuba for treatment is not too likely due to the current
- political climate between the U.S. and Cuba but I thought that the
- material might be of interest anyway.)
